First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise, unscheduled visit to McAllen, Texas, Thursday morning to view border facilities, to meet with detained families, and to learn how she could help get children reunited with their parents faster.
“Melania has arrived in Texas to take part in briefings and tours at a nonprofit social services center for children who have entered the United States illegally and a customs and border patrol processing center. Her goals are to thank law enforcement and social services providers for their hard work, lend support and hear more on how the administration can build upon the already existing efforts to reunite children with their families,” her office said in a release.
The First Lady gave a brief speech after touching down, expressing her desire to learn about the detainment process, and “ask you how I can help these children to reunite with their families as quickly as possible.”
She received a tour of the children’s rooms, and spoke with the facility’s administrators about how they help ensure the children’s physical and emotional well-being.
